When Communication Feels Like It's Going in Circles

Most couples who reach out are not in crisis. They are dealing with the same friction over and over: a conversation that turns into an argument, a partner who feels more like a roommate than a best friend, or a pattern neither of you can quite name but both of you feel. If you are a busy professional juggling a career, a family, and everything in between, it is easy to let the relationship run on autopilot until the distance becomes hard to ignore. Couples counselling gives you a structured way to slow down, understand what is actually happening between you, and build back toward each other with intention.

The Gottman Method: A Research Based Roadmap for Your Relationship

Jennifer Deprez is trained in the Gottman Method (Levels 1 and 2), a couples therapy approach built on decades of research by Dr. John Gottman and Dr. Julie Schwartz Gottman. Instead of open ended talk therapy, Gottman work uses the Sound Relationship House, a model that maps the specific skills healthy relationships run on: friendship, trust, conflict management, and shared meaning. Sessions are practical rather than abstract. You leave with a clear picture of where your relationship is strong, where it is strained, and a treatment plan built specifically around the two of you.

What Couples Work With Jennifer Looks Like

Your first session is together, so Jennifer can hear both perspectives and understand the relationship as a whole. The second session is one on one with each partner individually, giving each of you space to speak honestly without your partner in the room. From there, you come back together, and Jennifer builds a treatment plan from everything she has heard. Many couples also choose an optional relationship assessment, a brief questionnaire that produces a detailed report on what is working well and what needs attention. That data feeds directly into your plan, so the work stays focused on your actual relationship instead of generic advice.

Is Couples Counselling Right for You?

Couples counselling works whether both partners are fully on board or only one of you has reached out so far. It is common for one partner to book the first appointment on behalf of the relationship, and Jennifer will work with you on how to invite your partner in a way that feels safe rather than confrontational. Sessions are available in person in St. Catharines on Fridays, or virtually anywhere in Ontario, so you can choose whatever fits your schedule and comfort level. If conflict, communication, or a growing sense of distance is showing up in your relationship and you are ready to do something about it, this is a good place to start.
